DLAR Veterinary Services

All animal health problems, whether research protocol related or not, must be reported to DLAR veterinary staff for appropriate documentation, treatment, and disposition.

Clinical Health
Any report of a non-emergency clinical abnormality should be submitted on a DLAR Health Request Form to the DLAR veterinary staff. A drop box is located at the front desk of the main vivarium labeled ‘Treatment Room’ or you may fax it to 668-1642.

Veterinary Emergency
For emergency situations and after-hours concerns please use the veterinary emergency pager (970-9410); or as a back-up, the veterinary technician pager (970-2871).

Technical Services

DLAR strives to provide the researcher with a variety of technical services and assistance including antibody production, blood collection, handling assistance, post-operative care, etc. Please call (684-4171) if you have any specific questions of services we may provide.   A Technical Services Form is available on line.

Actual service requests must be submitted either in the Treatment room drop box at the front desk of the main vivarium or by fax to (668-1642) to be entered into the system. Verbal requests will not be fulfilled without an accompanying hardcopy of the request form.

Surgical Services
DLAR maintains a fully equipped surgical suite with accessories such as adjustable-heated surgical tables, laparascopic towers, in-house lines for CO2, O2, and vacuum, pulse oximeters, EKG, a full inventory of surgical instruments, and disposable supplies. Please call (681-5984) with specific questions.  A Surgical Services Form is available on line.

Actual surgical room requests, equipment reservations, surgical assistance requests, etc. must be submitted in hardcopy to the Treatment room drop box at the front of the main vivarium or by fax to (668-1642). Verbal requests or reservations will not be fulfilled or guaranteed without an accompanying hardcopy of the request form.

Pharmacy
Many of the medications and drugs that are regularly used by DLAR and research groups at DUMC are maintained in our DLAR pharmacy including those for analgesia and anesthesia. Requestors should submit an IR form to the Pharmacy drop box at the front desk of the vivarium or fax a copy to (668-1642). Orders for non-controlled drugs will be filled within 48hours; requestor will be contacted and the drugs left at the front desk. Orders for controlled drugs and substances can only be picked up directly from the pharmacy technician on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons between the hours of 2-4pm. Please submit the IR request at least 24 hours in advance of desired pick up time.
