MISSION STATEMENT:  Duke University’s Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) is a team of highly trained individuals dedicated to the humane care and use of research animals. Our strength and success is the outcome of our commitment to maintain the highest quality laboratory animal program and serve as a resource center for investigators. We strive to provide a standard of care that is second to none and results in the best possible quality of life for all laboratory animals.

The mission statement applies to all of the division’s customers and includes:

  • Regulatory and Accreditation Agencies which evaluate our program for the humane care and use of research animals
    • United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
    • Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW)
    • Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC)
  • Animal Users who expect high quality animals
  • Duke University which expects a quality animal care and use program consistent with sound financial management
  • General Public which expects humane care and use of laboratory animals in biomedical research

GOALS:  The mission statement serves as our overall business philosophy and the template for generating a strategic vision to accomplish this endeavor. In this regard, five goals are set forth that will be the drivers for the DLAR:

  • Provide quality care for all laboratory animals used at Duke University
  • Serve as a resource center for investigators and administration on all issues related to laboratory animals
  • Provide and support quality animal research models for investigators
  • Maintain compliance, in conjunction with Duke’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, with all regulatory and accreditation requirements
  • Position Duke University as a leader in laboratory animal science and management.
