Guidelines for
Systemic Analgesics

(Rodents)

 

Procedure

Mouse

Rat

 

 

 

Laparotomy

Duration 48 hrs

Buprenorphine: 0.05-0.1 mg/kg (SQ), bid

Or

Carprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid

Or

Ketoprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid

Or

Flunixin: 2.5 mg/kg (SQ, IM), bid

 

Buprenorphine: 0.01-0.05 mg/kg (SQ), tid - bid

Or

Carprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid

Or

Ketoprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid

Or

Flunixin: 2.5 mg/kg (SQ, IM), bid

 

 

 

Thoracotomy

Duration 48 hrs

Buprenorphine: 0.05-0.1 mg/kg (SQ, IV), bid

Plus

* Bupivicaine, 0.25%: Local infiltration along surgery site during closure (Max. dose 2 mg/kg)

Buprenorphine: 0.01-0.05 mg/kg (SQ, IV), bid - tid

Plus

* Bupivicaine, 0.25%: Local infiltration along surgery site during closure (Max. dose 2 mg/kg)

 

 

Orthopedic

Duration 48 hrs

Buprenorphine: 0.05-0.1 mg/kg (SQ, IV), bid

Plus

Carprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid post-operatively

Or

Ketoprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid

Buprenorphine: 0.01-0.05 mg/kg (SQ, IV), bid

Plus

Carprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid post-operatively

Or

Ketoprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid

Craniotomy

Duration 48 hrs

Lidocaine, 3% gel on ear bars and infiltrate incision line

Lidocaine, 3% gel on ear bars and infiltrate incision line

Skin Incision without Tissue Manipulation

(E.g. Cut-down)

* Bupivicaine, 0.25%: Local infiltration along surgery site during closure (Max. dose 2 mg/kg)

* Bupivicaine, 0.25%: Local infiltration along surgery site during closure (Max. dose 2 mg/kg)

Punch Biopsy

Buprenorphine: 0.05 mg/kg (SQ), bid

Or

Carprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ, IM), sid

Or

Flunixin: 2.5 mg/kg (SQ, IM), bid

Or

Ketoprofen: 5 mg/kg (SQ), sid

Or

** Ibuprofen (Children Motrin): Mice 30 mg/kg (4.7 ml), Rats 15 mg/kg (2.35 ml) in 500 ml of drinking water for at least 48 hours post-operatively

Skin Incision with Tissue Manipulation

(E.g. Muscle)

Digit Amputation

Mice>12 days of age

Rats>7 days of age

 Tail Biopsy

>21 days of age

Other regimens are acceptable with DLAR consultation and IACUC approval.

* Buprivicaine, 0.25% is acidic and is recommended to use in a 1:1 dilution with saline or sterile water.

** Acclimate rodents to treated water for 3 to 5 days prior to treating.
